The Workshop’s History and Objectives

The 19th-century Workshop of the HAS‒NSZL Res Libraria Hungariae Research Group was founded in January 2007 under the leadership of Dorottya Lipták as a research collective dealing with media history and operating alongside the Fragmenta Codicum Workshop.
Within the larger field of 19th-century book and media history, the group focuses on the impact of mass production and especially on the cultural, social, political, and literary historical aspects of the period between 1820 and 1920.
News

On 1st July 2022 the 19th-century Book and Media History Workshop will become an organisational unit of the National Széchényi Library assuming the name Dorottya Lipták Media History Research Group.

A new colleague joined our research community. Franciska Dede has become a member of our workshop in February 2022.

A blog entry entitled If something is humanly beautiful, I use it and do not ask who its originator is, and I wish that as many people would use it as possible was published by our colleague, Zsófia Bárány with the occasion of the official day of the Hungarian language (13th November). The text presents the main legislative stages by which Hungarian became the official language of the Hungarian state. Apart from the well-known literary and scientific facts, Zsófia Bárány also emphasizes the activity of some less known persons working for this cause.

On 20th November, a scholarly conference entitled On Celestial Waves. Radio Preachers in the Interwar Period took place, where Tibor Klestenitz presented a paper. Related to this conference, our colleague participated in a talk show broadcasted by EWTN television. The programme can be watched here.

A memorial conference was held in Ercsi on 5th November 2021 related to the reburial of the 19th-century writer, politician, and minister, Baron József Eötvös and of his family. Zsófia Bárány presented a paper entitled The Views of József Eötvös on the Freedom of Conscience and Religion at the conference. Find out more about the event here.

Zsófia Bárány presented a paper entitled Henrik Marczali and His Research in the Vatican at the scholarly conference New Results in the Research Regarding Hungarian Jews. The paper discussed the relationships that helped the historian of Jewish extraction to carry out research in the Vatican as well as his study about the connections between the papacy and Hungary during the Modern Age.

Our research group participated in this year's Researchers' Night event series with a set of lectures collectively entitled The Anatomy of a Fragment and held on 24 September 2021 in the National Széchényi Library. The entire programme can be accessed here.

Tibor Klestenitz presented a paper at the conference The Trianon Treaty and the Church. The talk entitled The Consequences of the Trianon Treaty on Church Government as Represented in the Hungarian Press presented the reactions of the Hungarian public to the church-political situation following World War I. A report on the conference is accessible here.

An article entitled "Végig a földön szárnyal a szavuk." A katolikus egyház és a rádiózás kezdetei Magyarországon ["Their words fly all over the world." The Catholic Church and the beginnings of radio broadcasts in Hungary] has been published in the May issue of the journal Vigilia by our colleague Tibor Klestenitz. The paper investigates how Hungarian Catholics availed themselves of the possibilities offered by the new medium after the start of regular radio broadcasts.

Two blog posts by our colleague Tibor Klestenitz were shared on the blog of the National Széchényi Library (nemzetkikönyvtár.blog.hu). One is entitled "Pompa és fény dolgában a legnagyszerűbb ünnepélyesség..." ‒ Az Ezredéves Kiállítás megnyitása 1896. május 2-án ["The most exquisite celebration with regard to pomp and glamour..." The opening of the Millennial Exhibition on 2 May 1896] and it discusses the opening ceremonies of the Millennial Exhibition and their reception by society. The other, entitled Kormányfő a villamoson ‒ Gróf Károlyi Gyula portréja [Prime minister on the tram. The portrait of Count Gyula Károlyi], discusses the image painted about the politician ‒ born 150 years ago ‒ in the Hungarian press.

The collective volume entitled Médiatörténeti tanulmányok 2020 [Studies on Media History 2020] containing a paper by our colleague Tibor Klestenitz has been made accessible in the Hungarian Electronic Library. The seven authors of the volume examine different topics related to the history of media in 19th- and 20th-century Hungary ranging from media enterprises in Kassa/Košice during the age of the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary to the literary representation of journalists in the Kádár Age. The volume can be accessed here.

Tibor Klestenitz’s volume entitled “Fejezetek az egyházi sajtó történetéből” (Chapters from the history of church media) was discussed in the online meeting of the HAS Committee on Media History held on 12th March 2021. The discussants were Tünde Császtvay (ELKH Institute for Literary Studies) and Zsófia Bárány (HAS–NSZL). The volume is available here.

Zsófia Bárány’s article entitled “Minden rész az egészért lévén alkotva” ‒ Gondolatok 1848-49-ből (“All parts having been created for the whole” – Thoughts from 1848–49) commemorating the 1848–49 revolution and freedom fight was published on the webpage of the Új Város Alapítvány (New City Foundation).

Klestenitz Tibor spoke about the Catholic press movement as a guest of the Bonum TV. Among other things, the impact of Pope Leo XIII’s modern views on the emergence of the Catholic press movement and the researcher’s interest in the topic were discussed during the talk which can be viewed here.

A memorial conference in honour of Dorottya Lipták will take place in the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on 12th June 2019. The event will begin at 14 PM. All interested are welcome!
The programme of the conference is available here.
